Macbeth

Macbeth is a story of heroism, treachery and retribution. The first scene begins with the emergence of three haggardly, old witches on a stormy night but quickly changes to King Duncan of Scotland receiving a report from a wounded captain that following an intense battle, Generals Macbeth and Banquo have conquered aggressive forces from Ireland and Norway, who had invaded Scotland. Following the battle, Macbeth and Banquo encounter three witches who inform them that Macbeth will become the thane of Cawdor and eventually king of Scotland. Banquo is informed that his son Malcolm will also come to power and rule the country with benevolence. To his surprise, Macbeth is quickly made the thane of Cawdor, fulfilling one of the witches’ prophecies. Lady Macbeth eventually convinces Macbeth to commit regicide and is appointed King of Scotland in his place.

Fearing murder by Banquo’s heirs, Macbeth preemptively hires assassins to eliminate the threat. One son, Fleance, manages to escape death, causing Macbeth’s worries to mount. Macbeth again seeks out the witches where he receives prophecies and is warned about The Scottish Nobleman Macduff. He is also told that he cannot be harmed by any man born of a woman and that he will be protected until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane Castle. Following Macduff’s flight to England, Macbeth captures his castle and orders his family to be executed. Macduff and other enemies, including some of Macbeth’s own nobles invade Scotland while Macbeth reinforces Dunsinane. Convinced that he is safe, Macbeth awaits the invaders. However, fear overwhelms him when the English army approaches with tree branches from Birnam Wood. During the ensuing battle, Macbeth is confronted by an angry Macduff who announces that he was not born of a woman, rather he was “untimely ripped” from his mother’s womb. Macduff beheads Macbeth on the battlefield and Malcolm assumes the crown of Scotland.
